U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has affirmed that President Donald Trump retains full authority over the timeline of ongoing American military operations involving Iran.
Speaking at a press briefing at the The Pentagon on Monday, Hegseth addressed questions from reporters regarding the potential duration of U.S. military engagement.
His remarks followed recent comments by Trump suggesting that the situation could continue for “four to five weeks.” However, the defense secretary downplayed the significance of any fixed timeframe, emphasizing that operational decisions ultimately rest with the president.
“The President has all the latitude in the world to discuss how long it might last or might not,” Hegseth said. “It could be four weeks, two weeks, even six weeks — and it could move forward or backward.”
Hegseth’s comments underscore the administration’s position that the timeline of U.S. involvement remains fluid and subject to strategic considerations determined by the White House.
