Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has publicly acknowledged the pivotal role played by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, in his emergence as governor, stating that he owes his political ascent to the former Rivers State leader.

Speaking on Friday while receiving the New Telegraph Man of the Year Award, Fubara dedicated the honour to Wike, describing him as the figure who “discovered” him and provided the platform that launched his political career.

“I do not care how anyone interprets it or misinterprets it. I dedicate this award to the Honourable Minister of the FCT, my oga, Nyesom Wike,” Fubara said. “Without him, I would not be standing here as governor. He discovered me, and that discovery gave me this visibility. Thank you for everything.”

The governor also extended the dedication to the people of Rivers State, commending their support and composure throughout the state’s recent political turbulence.

“I also dedicate this award to the people of Rivers State who have shown support, quietness and maturity that has brought us this far,” he added.

Fubara, who previously served as Accountant-General of Rivers State, was widely regarded as Wike’s political protégé ahead of the 2023 governorship election. He secured the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ticket with the strong backing of the former governor and went on to win the election.

However, their relationship later deteriorated, leading to a protracted political crisis that divided the Rivers State House of Assembly and sparked a struggle for control of the state’s political structure. The dispute attracted national attention and heightened tensions within the state.

The crisis was eventually eased following the intervention of President Bola Tinubu, who facilitated reconciliation efforts between the opposing camps, helping to restore relative stability to the state’s political landscape.

Fubara’s remarks on Friday signal a notable tone of acknowledgment and restraint amid a once-bitter political standoff, underscoring the complex dynamics shaping Rivers State politics.
