The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has successfully recovered a vehicle stolen three years ago during a kidnapping in Anambra State, demonstrating the effectiveness of the National Vehicle Identification Scheme (NVIS).
According to the FRSC, the recovery occurred on April 4, 2026, at the NVIS Desk Office in Nnewi during the processing of proof of ownership documents on the NVIS portal. Officials noticed discrepancies when the chassis number submitted did not match existing records, prompting further investigation.
A physical inspection confirmed the vehicle’s true identity and rightful owner, Mr. Onyechi Dickson Eze of Awka, whose car had been forcefully taken on January 23, 2023. The vehicle had been deliberately altered to conceal its identity, including a color change from red to gray and the installation of an unregistered number plate (NZM135AQ).
The Nigeria Police Force Area Command in Nnewi was alerted, leading to a coordinated operation with the State Criminal Investigation Bureau (SCIB), FRSC officials, and the Motor Licensing Authority (MLA) in Ojoto. Both the agent responsible for processing fraudulent documents and the applicant were arrested.
The recovered vehicle is currently in the custody of the SCIB Unit at the Nigeria Police Force Area Command, Nnewi, pending further investigation.
The FRSC highlighted that the incident underscores the importance of the NVIS in tracking stolen vehicles, combating fraudulent registration, and supporting national security. The Corps urged the public to verify vehicle documents before purchase and to cooperate with law enforcement to prevent vehicle-related crimes.
This recovery adds to the growing number of vehicles traced through the NVIS platform in 2026, reinforcing the Corps’ commitment to protecting lives and property.
