Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State has announced plans to contest for the Nasarawa North senatorial seat in the 2027 general elections, marking a reversal of his earlier public stance against seeking further elective office.
Sule, who is currently serving his second and final term as governor, had in January 2024, during an appearance on Politics Today on Channels Television, stated that he had no intention of running for the Senate after leaving office.
“I came in only to be a governor. I have no intention to run for the office of a senator. You can keep this tape and play it one day,” he had said at the time.
However, recent developments indicate a shift in position. His Special Assistant on Social Media, Ango Ngharni Emmanuel, disclosed via a Facebook post that the governor has now agreed to join the senatorial race.
According to the aide, Sule’s decision followed sustained pressure from political stakeholders and supporters within the ruling party, urging him to represent the district at the National Assembly.
Sources suggest that the push for his candidacy has largely come from loyalists, political appointees, and beneficiaries of his administration.
Born on December 26, 1959, Sule was first elected governor in 2019, succeeding former governor Umaru Tanko Al-Makura, who is widely regarded as a key figure in shaping the state’s modern political structure.
