The Federal Government has announced the immediate suspension of all Christian pilgrimages to Israel, citing growing security concerns in the Middle East.
The decision was disclosed on Tuesday by the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Christian Pilgrim Commission (NCPC), Bishop Stephen Adegbite, in a statement issued in Abuja. The statement was signed by the Commission’s Deputy Director and Head of Media and Public Relations, Mr. Celestine Toruka.
According to Adegbite, the suspension follows recent developments in the region, including the declaration of a state of emergency in Israel. He explained that the move was necessary to safeguard the lives and well-being of Nigerian pilgrims.
“The recent developments in the Middle East, including the imposition of a state of emergency in Israel, have led to the putting on hold of all pilgrimage exercises,” he said.
The suspension affects both government-organised pilgrimages and those conducted by private pilgrimage operators. The Commission stated that pilgrimage activities would resume once the security situation stabilises.
Adegbite noted that the NCPC is closely monitoring the situation and expressed appreciation to stakeholders and the media for their understanding and cooperation.
Despite the suspension, the Executive Secretary confirmed that the Commission successfully concluded the 2025 Main Pilgrimage exercise to Israel and Jordan. He disclosed that the final batch of pilgrims arrived safely at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport on March 3.
Adegbite also extended appreciation to President Bola Tinubu, the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, for their continued support.
He added that the President’s backing was instrumental in the successful conduct of five pilgrimage exercises since his appointment two years ago.
The Commission urged Nigerians to continue praying for peace in Jerusalem and across the Middle East as authorities monitor developments in the region.
