FG Halts Petrol Import Licences Again as Local Refineries Meet Demand

0

The Federal Government has again suspended the issuance of petrol import licences as domestic refining capacity continues to meet Nigeria’s fuel demand.

The development was disclosed on Wednesday by the Office of the Special Assistant to the President on Social Media through a post by Dada Olusegun on his X handle.

According to the statement, the suspension has now remained in effect for two consecutive months, reflecting the government’s renewed focus on prioritising locally refined petroleum products and strengthening the country’s refining sector.

“The Federal Government has suspended the issuance of petrol import licences for a second consecutive month as local refining capacity increasingly meets domestic demand,” the statement said.

It added that the move forms part of the government’s broader strategy to implement provisions of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA), which encourages reliance on domestic refining before allowing fuel imports.

Under the Act, petrol imports are only permitted when local refining capacity is insufficient to meet national demand.

The development signals the government’s intention to deepen the use of locally refined petroleum products while reducing dependence on imported fuel.
