FG Backs Down on 5% Petroleum Products Tax Amid Public Outcry, Labour Threats

ABUJA — The Federal Government has assured Nigerians that there is no immediate plan to enforce the controversial 5 per cent Petroleum Products Tax contained in the newly signed tax legislation.

Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, made the clarification at a press briefing in Abuja on Tuesday.

The announcement comes after the proposed levy sparked widespread outrage across the country, with organised labour issuing a stern ultimatum to the government — cancel the tax or face nationwide industrial action.

Edun’s statement is expected to ease mounting tensions, even as Nigerians continue to demand clarity on the government’s broader economic reform agenda.
