FG Approves $1bn Lagos Port Overhaul, Begins Nationwide Seaport Modernisation Drive

The Federal Government has approved a one billion US dollar modernisation project for the Lagos ports as part of a broader plan to transform Nigeria’s maritime infrastructure and enhance efficiency across its seaports.

Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, announced this during the 2025 Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) Nigeria Conference, themed “Enhancing Logistics and Transport for a Sustainable Blue Economy in Nigeria,” held in Lagos.

Represented by the Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho, the Minister said the port modernisation drive is aimed at upgrading infrastructure, improving cargo handling efficiency, and expanding capacity to align with global standards.

“We are working closely with all stakeholders to achieve a paperless, technology-driven port environment that enhances efficiency, reduces turnaround time, and curbs corruption,” Oyetola stated.

He explained that beyond the Lagos port project, the government has commenced the procurement process for similar modernisation initiatives at other seaports across the country, to ensure balanced development within Nigeria’s maritime gateways.

According to the Minister, the move underscores the administration’s commitment to boosting logistics performance, fostering competitiveness, and positioning Nigeria as a leading maritime trade hub in Africa.

Oyetola added that through sustained reforms, including the Deep Blue Project, Nigeria has maintained zero piracy incidents for three consecutive years, a record that has strengthened investor confidence and reduced the cost of doing business within the maritime domain.

“Since the inception of the Ministry, we have focused on strategic reform and institutional strengthening. With the Deep Blue Project and other interventions, we are safeguarding our maritime environment to encourage investment and drive sustainable growth,” he said.

The Minister reaffirmed that the Federal Government remains determined to build a world-class blue economy anchored on safety, innovation, and global best practices, ensuring that Nigeria’s ports become more efficient, secure, and competitive in international trade.
