Former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has said the return of Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, after the expiration of the state of emergency ought to have made him a better and wiser leader.
Fayose made the remarks during an interview on Politics Today, a Channels Television programme, monitored on Friday.
Drawing from his personal experience, Fayose recalled how he was once removed from office and forced into exile, but returned to public life as a better person. He stressed that leaders who get a second opportunity must learn from their past mistakes.
According to Fayose, President Bola Tinubu, like most people, detests ingratitude, dismissing claims that the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State amounts to politics taken too far.
The former governor argued that politics is governed by clear constitutional rules, adding that politicians only seek public sympathy when they step outside those rules.
“The coming back of Governor Fubara should have made him a better person. If you made a mistake the first time, the second time you are not supposed to go through that route,” Fayose said.
He described politics as a power game, insisting that no one solves political battles on behalf of another.
“With due respect, let me tell you, Fubara is the one enjoying the office of the governor of Rivers State. It’s not the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike,” he stated.
Fayose also dismissed suggestions that the Rivers crisis is connected to President Tinubu’s re-election bid.
“Some people are saying it’s about Tinubu’s election. No. Tinubu’s election will come first. Don’t forget that both Wike and Fubara will work for Tinubu. Two weeks after, there will be an election in Rivers State,” he added.
