Justice Faruku Bunza of the Kebbi State High Court has reunited with his family after spending one week in captivity, but conflicting accounts have emerged over the circumstances surrounding his release.
While the Kebbi State Police Command maintained that no ransom was paid to secure the judge’s freedom, members of his family have disputed the claim, alleging that ₦50 million, alongside soft drinks and biscuits, was handed over to the kidnappers before his release.
In a statement, the police insisted that Justice Bunza regained his freedom without any ransom payment.
However, a close family member challenged the official account, claiming the family negotiated with the abductors after an initial demand of ₦200 million and eventually agreed to pay ₦50 million, along with other requested items.
A relative of the judge, identified as Malam Faruku, confirmed that Justice Bunza returned home safely and was in good health.
When our correspondent visited Bunza, family members, friends and well-wishers were seen gathering at the judge’s residence to celebrate his safe return and offer prayers for his continued protection.
Another family member, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Justice Bunza was spotted alighting from a commercial vehicle at about 8 a.m. on Monday, signalling the end of his captivity.
The family member added that the kidnappers had initially demanded ₦200 million before negotiations reduced the amount to ₦50 million.
The incident has renewed concerns over the growing wave of kidnappings for ransom across Nigeria, with residents calling on security agencies to intensify efforts to tackle insecurity and protect citizens.
