Falola, Obasanjo, Tinubu Hail Ladoja Ahead of Historic Coronation as 44th Olubadan

Renowned historian and Professor of African Studies, Toyin Falola, has declared that the emergence of former Oyo State governor, Rashidi Ladoja, as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland will usher in a new era of modernization for the ancient city.

Speaking after delivering the Olubadan Coronation Lecture titled “Ibadan in History: Issues in Tradition and Modernity” at the University of Ibadan’s International Conference Centre, Prof. Falola described Ladoja as a statesman whose political experience, business acumen, and administrative background will drive the city’s transformation.

The Jacob and Frances Sanger Mossiker Chair in the Humanities at the University of Texas revealed that he had prepared a 400-page research material, later developed into a book, outlining steps that could help the new monarch achieve his dream of a modern Ibadan state.

In his goodwill message, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Prof. Kayode Adebowale, praised Ladoja’s ascension, expressing confidence that his reign would foster unity, peace, and progress in Ibadanland. Chairman of the Coronation Committee, Chief Bayo Oyero, described the lecture as historic, noting it was the first pre-coronation lecture in the city’s history.

Also adding his voice, former President Olusegun Obasanjo congratulated Ladoja in a letter dated July 14, 2025. In his trademark Yoruba royal prayer, Obasanjo said: “Ade a pe lori, bata a pe lese” (may your reign be long), while urging the incoming monarch to separate politics from tradition and lead with humility, patience, and divine wisdom.

Meanwhile, there are strong indications that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will attend the coronation. An advance team from the Presidency arrived yesterday at the newly upgraded Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport, Ibadan — the first landing since its closure in March 2024 for international-standard upgrades.

Governor Seyi Makinde, who performed the groundbreaking for the airport’s upgrade last year, said the facility would boost Oyo State’s economy by connecting it to global markets and strengthening both business and leisure travel.

The coronation of Oba Rashidi Ladoja as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland is scheduled to hold tomorrow, marking a historic moment for the city and its people.
