Falana Slams Dollar Bribe Culture: “It’s Criminal to Reject the Naira”

LAGOS — Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, SAN, has raised alarm over the growing trend of dollarisation in Nigeria, lamenting that even bribes are now being paid in foreign currency.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Sunday, Falana decried the increasing reliance on the dollar in local transactions, warning that rejecting the naira amounts to a criminal offence.

“The president was announcing gifts to footballers in dollars, not naira. It has to stop. We must promote the naira, not the dollar,” the senior lawyer said.

He urged government and citizens alike to restore confidence in Nigeria’s legal tender, insisting that the practice of paying fees, buying properties, or conducting business in dollars undermines the economy.

“As a matter of fact, it is a criminal offence to reject the naira. We need to stop paying fees and buying properties in dollars,” Falana stressed.
