The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has issued a stern warning to tanker drivers, limousine operators, bus park managers, and other informal business owners operating illegally along the Murtala Muhammed Airport (MMA) road in Lagos, directing them to vacate the area immediately or face enforcement action.
FAAN’s Managing Director, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, gave the directive during a media briefing at the agency’s Lagos headquarters as part of activities marking the 2025 FAAN Safety Week.
Kuku expressed concern over the continued occupation of the airport corridor despite several warnings, formal notices, and direct engagements, describing the activities of the illegal operators as unsafe and harmful to both aviation operations and the environment.
“We have major encroachers along the airport road—tanker drivers, limousine operators, and commercial bus drivers—who have been repeatedly advised to vacate those locations. Their continued presence poses serious safety and environmental risks,” she stated.
She noted that the unapproved activities have not only obstructed vehicular movement and compromised safety standards but have also contributed to pollution and poor sanitation around the airport axis.
According to Kuku, FAAN recently carried out a detailed sanitation and environmental assessment to identify all encroachers ahead of a major clearance exercise.
“We have worked closely with the Lagos State Government and federal security agencies to ensure full compliance. The area will be cleared soon, as relocation is now inevitable,” she warned.
The FAAN boss further explained that poor environmental conditions around airports attract wildlife—especially birds—which increases the risk of bird strikes, a serious threat to flight safety.
Kuku reaffirmed FAAN’s commitment to maintaining a safe, secure, and environmentally friendly airport environment through continuous collaboration with communities, regulators, and industry stakeholders.
She also called for stronger partnerships among legislators, regulatory agencies, airline operators, and service providers to ensure sustained adherence to safety and environmental standards across Nigeria’s aviation sector.
As part of the 2025 FAAN Safety Week, Kuku led an interactive session on Safety Management Systems (SMS) with the agency’s directors, focusing on improving operational efficiency and aligning FAAN’s practices with international aviation safety benchmarks.
