Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, was thrown into panic on Monday evening following a series of explosions reported in multiple parts of the city.
According to eyewitness accounts, the blasts occurred between 6:45 p.m. and 7:00 p.m., with loud explosions heard around Monday Market, Kaleri, the Post Office area, and the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.
The incidents caused widespread fear among residents, many of whom fled the affected areas and rushed home in search of safety.
The development comes less than 24 hours after suspected insurgents reportedly attempted to infiltrate the Kofa community on the outskirts of Maiduguri but were successfully repelled by security forces.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Nahum Daso, said preliminary reports indicate that explosions occurred at the Post Office area and the main entrance of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.
He noted, however, that authorities were yet to verify reports of a blast at Monday Market.
“Yes, there were reports of explosions at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital main gate and the Post Office area, but I have no information regarding the one at Monday Market. I will provide updates as soon as more details become available,” Daso stated.
Meanwhile, Dauda Iliya, media aide to the Borno State Governor, said relevant agencies are working to confirm whether there were any casualties resulting from the explosions.
Investigations are ongoing as security operatives continue to assess the situation.
