Explosions in Maiduguri: Peter Obi Warns of “Dangerous Normalization” of Insecurity in Nigeria

Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has expressed deep concern over Nigeria’s worsening security situation following deadly explosions in Maiduguri, Borno State.

In a statement released on Tuesday via his X account, Obi described the attacks—which reportedly left several people dead and more than 100 injured—as a grim reflection of the country’s growing insecurity.

He noted that the explosions, which occurred in vulnerable locations such as markets and areas near hospitals, underscore what he called a failure of governance in fulfilling its primary duty of protecting lives and property.

According to Obi, the absence of a strong and unified national response to such incidents signals a troubling shift toward the normalization of violence rather than decisive action against it.

The former Anambra State governor also referenced a series of recent attacks across multiple states, including Kwara, Nasarawa, Kogi, Plateau, Sokoto, and Benue, as well as reported security breaches within the Federal Capital Territory.

Obi extended his condolences to families who lost loved ones in the Maiduguri explosions and wished a speedy recovery to those injured.

“The nation is once again engulfed in grief and outrage,” he said, warning that continued inaction could further deepen the country’s security crisis.
