Ex-DSS Chief Lawal Daura Declares Bid for Katsina Governorship

Former Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Lawal Daura, has announced his intention to contest the Katsina State governorship election in 2027, citing deep dissatisfaction with the state’s current security situation and overall governance.

Daura made the declaration during an interview with DCL Hausa on Tuesday, revealing that he has concluded consultations regarding the political party platform under which he plans to run and will make it public in due course.

The former intelligence chief strongly criticised the incumbent administration, questioning the rationale behind any attempt to seek re-election amid what he described as poor performance, particularly in addressing insecurity.

Using a vivid metaphor, Daura argued that leadership requires knowing when to step aside.

“It is like placing a load on someone and adjusting it. When the person complains that the load is too heavy, you have to remove it to avoid destroying fragile items,” he said.
“For the current administration, we can say thank you for your efforts, but you should take a break because you cannot continue.”

Reflecting on his decision to enter partisan politics, Daura admitted that his governorship ambition was not something he had previously envisioned.

“I never saw myself coming out to contest. I have always participated from behind the scenes,” he said.

Daura’s declaration is expected to further reshape the political landscape in Katsina State ahead of the 2027 general elections, especially given his background in national security and intelligence.
