Former Chief of Defence Staff, General Lucky Irabor (rtd), has called on the Federal Government to formally declare war against bandits and insurgents wreaking havoc across the country.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday, Irabor said Nigeria lacks any legal framework indicating it is at war, stressing that such a declaration is crucial for a coordinated national response.
“There are no legal instruments indicating that Nigeria is at war — we’re only assuming that we are,” he said. “Declaring war will allow the government to aggregate the elements of state power directly toward the war effort.”
The retired general explained that an official war declaration would ensure better resource allocation, transparency, and accountability in the fight against insecurity.
“It will make a huge difference because resourcing will now be properly channelled, and accountability frameworks can be clearly defined to track results,” Irabor added.
He also emphasized that tackling insecurity requires more than just military might, but a comprehensive deployment of all elements of national power.
