I’ll never be lawmaker after being governor - El-Rufai

Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has been released from the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), according to a statement by his son, Bashir El-Rufai.

Bashir disclosed the development in a post shared on his X (formerly Twitter) account on Friday, confirming that his father had regained freedom after weeks in detention.

In his post, he criticised the anti-corruption agency, describing his father’s detention as unlawful, while also expressing gratitude to supporters who stood by the family during the period.

Nasir El-Rufai had been in ICPC custody since February 18 over allegations related to financial misconduct and other associated offences. As of the time of this report, the commission has not issued an official statement detailing the conditions surrounding his release.

The development comes amid a period of personal loss for the former governor, as his mother, Umma El-Rufai, passed away earlier on Friday in Cairo, Egypt.

Further details regarding both the release and the ongoing investigation are expected as the ICPC provides updates.
