Ex-Dangote Manager, two others bag 7 years imprisonment for $32,000 insurance fraud

A Lagos State High Court sitting in Ikeja on Tuesday sentenced to seven years imprisonment the former manager in Dangote Industries Limited and two other conspirators due to their involvement in fraudulent activities relating to insurance claims.

Justice S.S Ogunsanya in his judgment on Tuesday said that the act of the convicts contravened sections 323 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, No. 11 of 2011 as been established against them by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, in the cause of trial.

The judge said that the prosecution have proven the essential ingredients of the charge which is enough for the conviction of the defendants for $32,000 (Thirty-two Thousand US Dollars) insurance fraud.

EFCC had through its counsel, Samuel Daji, called witnesses and tendered exhibits to establish the case of the prosecution.

The trio of Raymond Akanolu, a former General Manager, Dangote Industries Limited, Mojisola Aladejobi and Balogun Omololu Alaba were arraigned on a two-count charge bordering on conspiracy and attempt to obtain money by false pretence to the tune of $32,000 (Thirty Thousand US Dollars).

The defendants, sometime in October, 2014, in Lagos allegedly conspired among themselves to defraud Dangote Industries Limited of the sum of $32,000 (Thirty Two Thousand United State Dollars) by inflating the premium for the renewal of insurance policy cover for its Hawker Aircraft with registration No. 5N-DGN. The offence is contrary to section 323 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, No. 11 of 2011.

They pleaded ‘not guilty’ to the charges preferred against them, thereby leading to their full trial.

In his judgment, Justice Ogunsanya found the defendants guilty of the offence and sentenced them to seven years imprisonment each on both counts of the charge.
