The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, has dismissed claims that the ongoing investigation of former Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), Abubakar Malami, is driven by personal motives.
Olukoyede made the clarification on Sunday while appearing on Sunday Politics, a current affairs programme on Channels Television, amid growing public debate over the probe.
According to the EFCC boss, Malami’s investigation did not begin under his leadership, stressing that he only inherited the case file after assuming office.
“I’m yet to understand the facts he would bring out to support that claim,” Olukoyede said. “All I did was ensure that the investigation was carried out in a very professional and thorough manner.”
He disclosed that Malami has been under investigation for nearly two and a half years following the end of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, long before he took charge of the anti-graft agency.
Olukoyede’s remarks appear to be a response to suggestions in some quarters that the former AGF is being targeted unfairly, as the EFCC continues its scrutiny of actions taken during his time in office.
The EFCC chairman maintained that the commission remains guided by evidence and due process, not personal interests, in all its investigations.
