The Academic Staff Union of Universities, or ASUU, has demanded in writing that all zonal coordinators and union chairs mobilize their members for the nationwide strike under directives from the Trade Union Congress and the Nigeria Labour Congress. The declaration was made in a letter that Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, the national president of ASUU, signed.
The letter read, “The Nigeria Labour Congress at a Joint National Executive Council of NLC and TUC directed all affiliate unions to commence the withdrawal of services with effect from midnight today November 13, 2023.
“As an affiliate of NLC, all members of our union are hereby directed to join this action of NLC to protect the interest of Nigerian workers and the leadership of the union.
“Zonal coordinators and branch chairpersons should immediately mobilise our members to participate in the action. A people united, cannot be defeated.”
The Labor Centers declared the start of a countrywide strike on Monday. The strike is in protest of the ongoing labour disputes in Imo State as well as the beating of NLC President Joe Ajaero and a few other congress leaders in Owerri, Imo State, on November 1.
The NLC’s Head of Information, Benson Upah, revealed that Ajaero had been taken into custody by the police before a state-wide demonstration in Imo.
