ASUP, ASUU members get credit alerts as FG commences payment of arrears

Members of the striking Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) have been receiving credit alerts from their respective banks after the Federal Government commenced payments of their arrears.

ASUU has embarked on strike action against the Federal Government to protest and make some demands bordering on the welfare packages of its members as well as the overall development of the education sector.

A few months after ASUU commenced its strike, the academic staff association in polytechnics (ASUP) followed their lead and also declared a warning strike action against the government to table their demands too.

The Education sector of Nigeria over the past few months has been brought to its knees as a result of the strike actions, with all universities being shut since February 2022.

Several meetings between the striking unions and the government have been held to ensure the strikes are being called off. Nigerian students across the country have also embarked on protests and threatened to disrupt flight activities in the country if the government does not find a solution to the strikes.

In the latest development toward ending the strikes, the government has been said to have commenced the payment of arrears owed to the striking lecturers.
