Prince Kanu, younger brother of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has raised fresh concerns over his brother’s deteriorating health condition while in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).
In a post shared on Facebook on Thursday, Prince Kanu appealed for prayers for the IPOB leader, lamenting that his health challenges have worsened and accusing some individuals of politicizing his medical situation.
According to reports by Daily Post, Nnamdi Kanu, who is currently facing terrorism-related charges, has asked the court to allow him to receive medical care at the National Hospital, Abuja. He alleged that the DSS clinic where he is currently being treated has failed to provide adequate medical attention.
His lawyers also accused the DSS of falsifying his medical records.
Presiding Judge, Justice James Omotosho, had directed the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) to independently assess Kanu’s health status before deciding whether his treatment should be transferred to the National Hospital. However, the absence of the NMA’s report stalled court proceedings on Wednesday, prompting an adjournment until October 16, 2025.
Expressing deep concern, Prince Kanu said his brother’s condition is critical, describing each day Nnamdi Kanu wakes up as “a miracle.”
He wrote:
“I spend each day with Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, making sure he gets all the help he needs. I witness pain every day, and I, along with many others, share his suffering.
I’ll say it again: those of you who are using Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s health problems for political purposes, particularly those who are against his release for proper medical treatment, will have nowhere to hide.
The pain is getting worse and worse. If you paid close attention yesterday, you would have seen that he was entering the court slowly to avoid falling.
Each day he wakes up is a miracle. Pray for Mazi Nnamdi Kanu (IPOB Leader).”
