Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has stepped down from his position with immediate effect.
In a letter dated December 1 and addressed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Abubakar explained that his resignation was due to health-related concerns.
Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, confirmed the development, stating that President Tinubu has accepted the resignation and expressed gratitude for Abubakar’s service to the nation.
The President is expected to notify the Senate of his preferred replacement before the week runs out.
Abubakar, 63, previously served two terms as governor of Jigawa State between 2015 and 2023. He was appointed Defence Minister on August 21, 2023.
His exit comes at a time the President has declared a national security emergency, with further details of the administration’s security roadmap expected soon.
