Former Labour Party vice-presidential candidate, Datti Baba-Ahmed, has said that Nigeria can only experience genuine leadership and lasting security when leaders emerge through credible elections.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Tuesday, Baba-Ahmed stressed that insecurity in the country is closely tied to the culture of electoral malpractice.
“Only when you have the right leaders; you can only have the right leaders when you have them truly elected,” he said.
According to him, the cycle of killings and instability will persist so long as elections are manipulated.
“So long as people steal elections, you will never have security. Most drastic is that when that group of people use the tools of insecurity that we saw in 2015, and it worked, they achieved what they wanted,” he explained.
He further accused the political class of weaponizing religion, ethnicity, internal party divisions, and massive financial inducements to seize power, warning that such practices undermine both democracy and national stability.
