Dangote Refinery Fires Nigerian Workers Hours After Joining PENGASSAN

The management of Dangote Petroleum Refinery has terminated the employment of its Nigerian workers in what it described as a “total re-organisation” of the plant.

The decision, announced in a memo dated September 25, 2025, and signed by the Chief General Manager of Human Asset Management, Femi Adekunle, comes less than 24 hours after about 90 percent of the affected workers reportedly joined the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN).

Political commentator, Imran Wakili, who shared the memo on X, alleged that the mass dismissal was carried out under the guise of reorganization following the workers’ move to unionize.

According to the internal notice, the refinery cited “reported cases of sabotage in different units of the refinery” as part of the reasons behind the shake-up. It directed affected staff to hand over all company property to their line managers and obtain exit clearance.

The finance department was also mandated to compute benefits and entitlements for payment in line with the terms of employment.

While thanking the dismissed workers for their services, the management maintained that the move was necessary to reposition the refinery.

This development comes amid a lingering trade dispute between Dangote Refinery and PENGASSAN over unionization rights.
