The Cross River State Government, in partnership with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), has launched 18 condom dispensing points across Calabar to promote safe sex practices and curb the spread of HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections.
The initiative, which comes ahead of the highly anticipated Calabar Carnival in December, aims to ensure residents and visitors have free and easy access to condoms, particularly during the festive period when the city welcomes thousands of tourists.
Speaking during the commissioning of one of the dispensers at the Cross River State Agency for the Control of AIDS (SACA) office on Ndidem Usang Iso Road, the agency’s Director General, Dr. Charles Iwara, said the project is part of the state’s broader strategy to achieve zero new HIV infections by 2030.
He revealed that out of the 18 identified locations, 10 are currently operational. These include the University of Calabar (UNICAL), Palladium, UNFPA Office, SACA Office, Marina Resort, Airport Field, 10/10, Atekong Junction, and General Hospital, Mary Slessor Avenue.
“This effort is part of a larger campaign to promote safe sex and increase awareness about HIV prevention in Calabar. We also plan to extend the initiative across the state — from Bakassi to Akamkpa — in due course,” Dr. Iwara stated.
He added that, alongside free condom distribution, SACA is also offering sexual education, HIV testing, and counseling at its offices and public health facilities.
“With the Christmas Village set to open on December 1, we recognize that young people may engage in risky behavior. These dispensers will ensure that everyone knows where to get free condoms and reliable information on safe sex,” he said.
Dr. Iwara expressed appreciation to UNFPA for donating the condoms, emphasizing that they are available free of charge to individuals aged 18 and above. He also encouraged abstinence before marriage while advising sexually active individuals to utilize the free dispensers, which operate 24 hours a day.
The initiative underscores Cross River’s commitment to public health and aligns with global efforts to reduce HIV transmission and promote safer sexual practices.
