Tragedy As Gunmen Kill Newly Married Couple, 8 Others

Separatist gunmen allegedly killed ten people, including a newlywed couple, and injured two more at a prominent junction in Bamenda, Cameroon’s volatile northwest. The regional governor reported this terrible situation on Monday.

After many years together, the pair, known as Mr Simplice Longtsi Tsomene and Mme Tanga Helene Raissa, legalized their marriage two months ago.

The pair operated a phone shop on Bamenda’s Old Treasury Street and had built their private mansion in Abangoh, where they lived with other family members. They have three kids: two boys and one girl. The eldest child is seven years old, while the youngest is two years old.

According to a witness, the attackers arrived in vehicles late on Sunday, forced them to lie down on the ground, and then opened fire on them, accusing them of failing to support local separatists. While some followed their orders, others fled.

The Ambazonia Defence Forces (ADF), the primary separatist group in the English-speaking region, has claimed culpability. The ADF has been fighting since 2017 in protest of perceived marginalization by the mainly French-speaking administration.

The governor of the North West region, Adolphe Lele Lafrique, told Reuters that a manhunt had been initiated for the “terrorists” responsible for the killing.
