Tension has gripped Butura village following the killing of herders when hoodlums attacked a vehicle in Butura District, Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State. Two others were said to have escaped in the attack, which took place around 7 am yesterday.

The latest was said to have occurred a day after a 43-year-old herder, identified as Abubakar Sa’id, was killed in the Kop Mandarken community in Bokkos District.

The state chairman of Gan Allah Fulani Development Association of Nigeria (GAFDAN), Garba Abdullahi, gave the names of the victims as Halilu Jamo,  Mu’azu Ali and Anas Babangida.

Narrating how the incident occurred, he said: “The victims were conveying millet to their house in Butura, which they bought from Fadan Karshe Market when suddenly, some hoodlums attacked them. In the process, Halilu Jamo was killed instantly, while Mu’azu Ali and Anas Babangida, escaped the attack.

“The vehicle alongside the millet was burnt down. We have informed the security agencies about the incident. Following the report, the personnel of Operation Safe Haven, maintaining peace in the area, escorted us to recover the corpse of the deceased. We are calling on the security agencies to put an end to these needless killings.”

Executive Director of Stefanos Foundation, Mark Lipdo, said he received information about the tension in Bokkos LGA due to two security breaches which occurred early in the morning yesterday.

According to him, information gathered from sources on the ground revealed that two separate incidents occurred in Bokkos LGA; one at Butura company and the other at the Gada area of the local government.

He said: “Sources said in the case of Butura company, the Fulani armed militia continued their attack on the community, claiming that one of their members was found dead in the area. While in Gada, a local farmer who went to harvest his crop was killed by the same Fulani militia on the farm.

“Presently, there is a protest ongoing in Bokkos town by locals. Stefanos Foundation is deeply saddened by these developments. The police have not been able to deploy more security as promised.

“We call on citizens in the area to continue to maintain restraint as we trust that the Almighty God, who is the judge of all evil, will soon bring justice in the situation.”
