A 500-level student of Covenant University, identified as Toluwase Jesutunmise, has died after collapsing during a football training session on the university campus.

The incident, which occurred on Monday, has sparked fresh concerns over student health monitoring and emergency response systems in tertiary institutions.

In an official statement released on Wednesday, the university confirmed that the student had actively participated in the training session before stepping aside after complaining of leg pain and fatigue.

Moments after leaving the pitch, teammates reportedly observed him gasping for breath, prompting an immediate emergency response.

He was quickly rushed to the institution’s medical centre, located near the training ground, where medical personnel initiated resuscitation efforts using cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and an automated external defibrillator (AED). Despite these efforts, he was pronounced dead on arrival at the emergency unit.

The Vice-Chancellor, Timothy Anake, described the late student as diligent and vibrant, noting that his passing represents a profound loss to the university community.

According to preliminary findings released by the institution, a previously undisclosed heart condition is suspected to have contributed to the tragic incident.

The university maintained that there was no negligence on the part of its medical team, stating that all necessary emergency protocols were followed and equipment was promptly deployed.

Management also disclosed that officials have remained in close contact with the bereaved family since the incident and continue to provide support.

The institution extended its condolences to the family, noting that the sudden loss has cast a pall of mourning over the campus community.
