Court Halts PDP National Convention, Orders Party to Let Lamido Contest Chairmanship

The Federal High Court in Abuja has stopped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from holding its national convention scheduled for November 15–16 in Ibadan, Oyo State.

Justice Peter Lifu issued the order on Friday while delivering judgment in a suit filed by former Jigawa State governor, Sule Lamido. The court also barred the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from supervising or recognising any PDP convention conducted without giving Lamido the opportunity to contest.

Justice Lifu ruled that the evidence before the court showed Lamido was unfairly denied access to a nomination form for the office of National Chairman, a move the court described as a violation of the PDP Constitution and its internal guidelines.

According to the judgment, the PDP has a legal obligation to ensure fair participation for all members and must create avenues for them to pursue political ambitions.

As part of the consequential orders, the judge directed the party to suspend preparations for the convention until Lamido receives the nomination form and is allowed time to mobilise support and campaign.

“Before any convention is held, the PDP is to make nomination forms available to the plaintiff,” Justice Lifu ruled. “It is hereby held that the convention be put on hold for the plaintiff to obtain a nomination form, campaign and mobilise supporters.”

The decision effectively stalls the party’s planned gathering and places additional pressure on its leadership to comply with the court’s directives.
