The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, has paid glowing tribute to officers and soldiers of the Nigerian Army, describing their sacrifices as the foundation of the nation’s peace and stability.
Shaibu, who was represented by the Director-General of the Nigerian Army Heritage and Future Centre, Maj.-Gen. Tariwerie Gagariga, gave the commendation on Thursday at the 2025 Chief of Army Staff Christmas Carol held in Abuja.
He said the Christmas season offers a solemn moment for troops to reflect on the year’s battles, victories, challenges and blessings, and to appreciate God for the gift of life.
The Army Chief noted that 2025 had been “eventful, demanding and operationally rewarding,” adding that the gallantry of troops across all theatres of operation was responsible for the Army’s contributions to national security.
“You are the reason Nigeria continues to stand united and secure. As your Chief of Army Staff, I salute your courage, dedication and unwavering loyalty to God, country and the uniform you proudly wear,” he said.
Shaibu urged personnel to remain disciplined and vigilant while celebrating the festive season, especially as military operations intensify toward the end of the year.
He assured Nigerians that the Nigerian Army remains committed to defending the nation, stressing that the force’s achievements are anchored on the professionalism and cooperation of its personnel.
The COAS expressed appreciation to officers and soldiers for their hard work throughout 2025 and encouraged them to enter the New Year with renewed confidence and commitment to duty.
He also prayed for peace, joy and divine blessings for families within the Army community and wished troops a Merry Christmas and a prosperous 2026. Shaibu further commended military families for their steadfast support to personnel serving on the frontline.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Christian Carol of Nine Lessons featured scriptural readings by dignitaries and captivating music performances from gospel ministers including Panam Percy Paul, Yadah, Pam Monday and Jeremiah Femi Coker, alongside military choirs from various formations.
The First Lady, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, served as the Special Guest of Honour and was represented by Mrs Oghogho Musa, wife of the Minister of Defence.
In his sermon, the officiating minister and Director of Chaplain Services (Roman Catholic), Rev. Fr (Brig.-Gen.) Anthony Maimagani, urged Christians to embrace love, unity and positive thinking as exemplified by Jesus Christ, noting that the Christmas season is a time to show affection toward one another.
