161 Nigerians who were left trapped in Libya have been safely evacuated by the Federal Government of Nigeria. The evacuation was carried out in coordination with the International Organization for Migration (IOM), according to Nigeria’s ambassador to Libya, Kabiru Musa.

According to Musa, the purpose of the voluntary humanitarian repatriation (VHR) program was to make sure that Nigerian migrants would not become stuck in Libya.

“The evacuees departed the Mitiga International Airport, Tripoli on a chartered flight on Tuesday and are expected to arrive at the Murtala Mohammed Airport, Lagos, later in the day,” Musa said.

“The evacuees are 100 adult females, 37 adult males, 16 children, and eight infants. They will be received by officials on arrival to facilitate their resettlement and reintegration into the society.”

He proceeded by saying that the mission has been working with pertinent organizations to raise Nigerians’ awareness of the dangers of forced labour and slavery, as well as illegal migration. Musa restated the government’s commitment to ensuring that Nigerians are not left behind or imprisoned in Libyan detention centres.
