Bukarti Backs Tinubu’s Shake-Up of Service Chiefs, Calls Move ‘Long Overdue’

Security analyst and consultant Bulama Bukarti has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his recent reshuffling of Nigeria’s service chiefs, describing the move as both timely and necessary in light of the country’s worsening security challenges.

Speaking on Sunday Politics, a Channels Television programme monitored by DAILY POST, Bukarti said the decision reflects a realistic understanding of the current security landscape and the need for renewed leadership at the highest levels of Nigeria’s defense institutions.

“When you have looked at what has happened in Nigeria’s security landscape over the past year or two, you would realise that change of leadership is long overdue,” Bukarti stated.

He noted that while the administrations of President Tinubu and his predecessor, former President Muhammadu Buhari, made significant progress in degrading the Boko Haram insurgency, the past year has witnessed a troubling resurgence of attacks in the North-East.

“Boko Haram, for instance, is still residing in parts of Borno and Yobe States. The group has recently launched multiple assaults on military formations, sometimes resulting in the deaths of soldiers,” Bukarti said, adding that such developments point to a deterioration in operational momentum.

The security expert argued that the reshuffling of the military hierarchy is therefore a strategic necessity, not merely a political gesture. “If the President is looking at the realities on the ground — the renewed violence, the shifting tactics of insurgents, and the strain on troops — then it is the right time for a change in service chiefs,” he emphasized.

President Tinubu had on Friday announced sweeping changes across Nigeria’s military leadership in what the Presidency described as part of broader efforts to strengthen the nation’s defense and security architecture. The new appointments are expected to inject fresh energy into the campaign against insurgency, banditry, and other security threats confronting the country.
