Ikeja High Court remands boat owner in prison custody

An Ikeja High Court, Lagos, remanded a boat owner in prison custody on an incident that occurred around the waterfront community of Ilashe on July 2020.

Elebiju Happiness was arraigned on a 10 count charge bordering on involuntary manslaughter contrary to section 224 and punishable under 229 of the criminal laws of Lagos State 2015.

The State prosecutor and the Director of Public Prosecution, Mrs Olayinka Adeyemi told the honorable court that Happiness was carrying passengers more than the capacity of the boat which made it capsize and also for involving in other illegal activities of boat operators.

The charges were read to the defendant in an open court and he pleaded not guilty to all the charges preferred against him.

Upon this, Mrs Adeyemi requested the defendant be remanded in the prison custody and also asked for a trial date.

She also informed the court that the prosecution has 13 witnesses to call but two witnesses would be ready to testify against the defendant on the next adjourned date.

Justice Josephine Oyefeso adjourned till August 27 for commencement of trial and ordered the defendant to be remanded in prison custody.
