Today Monday, June 26, 2023, hundreds of protestors took to the streets of Kano to voice their unhappiness with the state government’s continuing demolition projects.
According to the investigations, the state’s government has demolished a few buildings and has designated the demolition of a few others.
The government justified its action by claiming that the previous administration “illegally” allotted the land on which the impacted structures were built.
The multi-billion Naira project at the former Daula Hotel, shopping centers at the Polo Ground and the Eid Ground, and residential and commercial complexes in the Salanta district and on BUK road have already been demolished.
The demonstrators who took to the streets early on Monday asked that the government reverse its decision, even though the government has declared there is no turning back in its vow to “restore” the Kano Urban Development Masterplan, which includes dismantling buildings erected on public spaces.
Following their gathering at the demolished Daula Hotel, the demonstrators made their way to the police headquarters to voice their complaints while carrying signs that read, among other things, “Gov. Yusuf, your action is sending away investors,” “Don’t bring insecurity to our state, Mr. Governor,” and “Let the law take its cause.”
“If the current governor has anything against his predecessor, please call him to answer questions instead of punishing innocent Nigerians and destroying their investment,” Comrade Zahraddeen Sani Baba of the Coalition for Good Governance and Change Initiative stated on behalf of the demonstrators.
