Bauchi Police Arrest Man for Brutal Assault, Confinement of 11-Year-Old Almajiri

The Bauchi State Police Command has arrested a 28-year-old man, Lawal Nasiru, for allegedly assaulting and unlawfully confining an 11-year-old Almajiri pupil in Darazo Local Government Area of the state.

Police spokesman, CSP Ahmed Mohammed Wakil, in a statement on Thursday, said the disturbing incident occurred on September 21, when Nasiru, a resident of Unguwar Jarmai, tied the victim, Sani Abdullahi, with a heavy rope before beating him with a thick cable and stick.

The young pupil, attached to a Tsangaya school, sustained severe injuries on his hands and legs.

The case was reported to the Divisional Police Headquarters, Darazo, by Idris Mohammed of Gidan Waya, an officer with the Social Welfare Department. Following the complaint, the Divisional Police Officer, SP Auwalu Ilu, led a team to the scene and arrested the suspect.

The injured boy was immediately taken to the General Hospital, Darazo, for medical treatment.

During interrogation, the suspect confessed to tying the child but claimed he did so to prevent him from escaping the Tsangaya school before his parents’ arrival. The victim, however, maintained that he was unjustly confined and subjected to inhumane treatment for a long period.

The Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, has directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Bauchi for a thorough investigation.

Police authorities assured that the suspect would be profiled and charged to court upon conclusion of investigations.
