Deputy President of the Senate, Barau I. Jibrin, has strongly condemned the invasion of Zurin Mahauta village in Lakwaya town, Gwarzo Local Government Area of Kano State, describing the attack as unacceptable and demanding swift action against those responsible.
In a statement posted on his official X handle, @barauijibrin, the lawmaker said the attack occurred on Sunday night and was carried out by armed criminals who stormed the community and abducted residents.
“Last night’s invasion of Zurin Mahauta village in Lakwaya town in Gwarzo Local Government Area of Kano State by marauding gunmen is condemnable, and these criminals must be dealt with forthwith,” Barau stated.
He disclosed that residents informed him that the attackers allegedly came from neighbouring states, raising concerns over cross-border criminal movements.
“My constituents told me that the criminal elements from neighbouring states stormed the village last night,” he said.
Barau, however, confirmed that security agencies have recorded progress, with three of the five abducted persons already rescued.
“The good news is that the security operatives have rescued three out of the five persons kidnapped,” he noted.
The senator cited an earlier media report to corroborate the rescue operation, referencing an online publication by Daily Trust, which quoted Captain Babatunde Zubairu, Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, 3 Brigade, Nigerian Army, as confirming that three victims had been freed.
Commending the security agencies for their prompt response, Barau urged them to sustain the momentum until the remaining victims are rescued.
“I commend the security operatives for swiftly rescuing the three persons and urge them not to relent in securing the remaining two persons,” he said.
Expressing concern that the attack came after weeks of relative calm in the area, the lawmaker stressed that such incidents must not be allowed to persist.
“This unfortunate incursion must be the last in the series of attacks on our peace-loving people. For weeks, there have been no attacks in our area until last night,” he said.
Barau further appealed to security agencies to intensify surveillance and strengthen security presence in vulnerable communities to prevent future attacks.
“The security of our people’s lives and properties is paramount. I will continue to support the security agencies in performing their duties,” he added.
