MINNA — Niger State governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, has announced a strategic partnership with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) to audit the state’s financial records, correct anomalies, and strengthen its accounting systems.
Bago disclosed this on Monday while declaring open the 20th Northern Zonal Accountants’ Conference in Minna, themed “Accountability and National Re-orientation: Unlocking Nigeria’s Socio-Economic Potentials.”
According to the governor, the move would serve as a model for other states in promoting transparency and fiscal discipline, which he described as essential for good governance and unlocking Niger State’s economic potential.
“The partnership with ICAN to audit the state’s financial record would set an example for other states of the federation, because transparency and fiscal discipline are necessary tools for delivering good governance and unlocking the vast potentials of the state economy,” Bago said.
He added that accountability, rebuilding public trust, fostering national values, and driving economic growth remain priorities for his administration. “My administration will continue to strengthen institutions of accountability for the benefit of the people,” he assured.
Bago also urged participants at the conference to come up with practical recommendations that would help governments at all levels strengthen governance structures and inspire public confidence.
In his remarks, ICAN President, Mallam Haruna Nma Yahaya, welcomed the partnership and pledged that the institute would maintain its independence in auditing Niger State’s financial records.
