Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has said that experiences of violence and disorder are not new to him, following an attack on him and members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Edo State.
Obi made the remarks on Wednesday in a statement posted on his verified X handle, a day after the incident occurred during a political engagement in the state.
The former Anambra State governor expressed appreciation to Nigerians for their prayers, calls and solidarity in the aftermath of the attack. He also extended his gratitude to supporters who stood by the family of former Edo State governor, Chief John Oyegun, describing him as a distinguished elder who has served the country honourably. Obi equally acknowledged support for another former governor of the state, Professor Oserheimen Osunbor.
According to him, the outpouring of goodwill has strengthened his faith in the country’s shared humanity and renewed his commitment to national service.
“Experiences of lawlessness are not new to me,” Obi stated, recalling that the violence and insecurity that once plagued Anambra State motivated him to seek the governorship with a resolve to restore order, security and public trust.
He warned that the increasing wave of insecurity and lawlessness across Nigeria demands collective responsibility from citizens, urging men and women of goodwill to actively participate in shaping the country’s leadership.
Quoting the Greek philosopher Plato, Obi noted that the price good people pay for refusing to engage in governance is to live under the rule of bad leaders.
He called on Nigerians to be resolute in electing leaders defined by competence, commitment, character and compassion, stressing that national interest must take precedence over personal ambition.
Obi concluded by expressing optimism that with unity and courage, Nigerians can build a peaceful, secure and prosperous nation.
