Atiku Speaks on Son’s Defection to APC, Says Decision Is Personal

Former Vice President and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has reacted to the decision of his son, Abba Abubakar, to join the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing it as a personal choice that does not affect his political convictions.

In a statement shared on his official X handle, Atiku said his son’s decision was made independently and should not be seen as unusual in a democratic setting, even when politics intersects with family ties.

“The decision of my son, Abba Abubakar, to join the APC is entirely personal. In a democracy, such choices are neither unusual nor alarming, even when family and politics intersect,” he said.

The former vice president stressed that he does not interfere in the personal beliefs of his children, noting that such freedom of choice reflects his commitment to democratic values.

“As a democrat, I do not coerce my own children in matters of conscience, and I certainly will not coerce Nigerians,” Atiku added.

However, Atiku used the opportunity to restate his criticism of the ruling party, expressing concern over what he described as poor governance under the APC. According to him, the country continues to face deep economic and social challenges as a result of the party’s leadership.

“What truly concerns me is the poor governance of the APC and the severe economic and social hardships it has imposed on our people,” he said.

He further reaffirmed his resolve to work with other like-minded Nigerians to push for better governance and present a viable alternative to the current administration.

“I remain resolute in working with like-minded patriots to restore good governance and offer Nigerians a credible alternative that brings relief, hope, and progress,” Atiku stated.
