Atiku Sets 2027 Condition: Will Step Down for Younger, Vibrant Candidate

A key figure in the opposition coalition, African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, has declared his readiness to withdraw from the 2027 presidential race if a younger, vibrant, and widely acceptable candidate emerges.

Speaking in an interview with BBC Hausa Service on Wednesday, the former Vice President emphasized that his ambition was not driven by personal interest but by the need to offer Nigerians a credible alternative.

Atiku urged younger Nigerians to take active roles in politics, assuring that he would throw his full support behind any candidate capable of leading the country effectively.

“My being in the 2027 race does not prevent anyone from contesting. If a vibrant and widely accepted younger candidate emerges, I am willing to step aside,” he said.

He further dismissed suggestions that he was desperate for the presidency, insisting that his only motivation was to help rescue Nigeria from those who had held it hostage.
