Atiku Denies Stepping Down Rumour, Clarifies BBC Hausa Interview

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has dismissed reports suggesting he is ready to step down for another presidential aspirant ahead of the 2027 elections.

The speculation arose after a recent interview with the BBC Hausa Service, where Atiku was quoted as saying he would abandon his presidential ambition if a younger and vibrant candidate emerged victorious in the African Democratic Congress (ADC) primary.

Clarifying the interview, Atiku’s media aide, Paul Ibe, described the viral interpretation as misleading.

“After carefully reviewing the video and transcripts – both in Hausa and the English translation – it is clear that at no point did the former Vice President say or imply he was stepping down for anyone,” Ibe stated.

According to him, Atiku only emphasized that young Nigerians and other aspirants are free to contest, adding that if a younger candidate emerged through a competitive process, he would support such a person wholeheartedly.

Ibe cautioned against “stretching interpretation to the point of mischief,” stressing that the insinuations attributed to Atiku were inaccurate and do not reflect his actual comments.
