Activist and politician, Omoyele Sowore, has raised alarm over an alleged assassination plot against him, describing it as part of a broader and sustained campaign to silence dissenting voices in Nigeria.
Sowore’s reaction follows claims by fellow activist, Chizorom Harrison Ofoegbu, popularly known as Ijele, who alleged the existence of a plot targeting him.
In a statement posted on X, Sowore said the alleged plot is “not an isolated incident,” but reflects what he called a consistent pattern of intimidation and violence aimed at critics of injustice and oppression.
“The assassination plot against me, as revealed by Harrison Ofoegbu, also known as ‘@IjeleSpeaks2,’ is not an isolated incident. It is part of a consistent and deeply troubling pattern of targeted intimidation and violence aimed at silencing dissent and crushing voices that challenge injustice,” he stated.
According to him, the development reinforces his long-held belief that deliberate efforts exist to threaten, suppress, and possibly eliminate outspoken individuals. He stressed that such actions are “neither random nor accidental,” but carefully orchestrated.
Sowore also recounted his past encounters with Ofoegbu, noting that they first met at the Federal High Court Abuja during proceedings in the trial of Nnamdi Kanu, where initial tensions later gave way to collaboration.
He further alleged that Ofoegbu had previously been subjected to arrest and prolonged detention under stringent bail conditions, as well as plans to transfer him under circumstances he believed could have endangered his life.
Linking the claims to his own experiences, Sowore said he has survived multiple assassination attempts, including incidents allegedly involving security operatives. He also referenced the controversial 2021 killing of his brother, Felix Olajide Sowore.
Tracing the pattern of threats back to his days as a student activist at the University of Lagos in the 1990s, Sowore alleged that security forces and other actors had long targeted outspoken student leaders.
Despite the alleged threats, he maintained that efforts to silence him have failed.
“The recent revelations by @IjeleSpeaks2 should not be dismissed as mere outbursts,” he said, adding, “While he did not personally disclose to me the specifics of any plot, I have long been aware of repeated attempts on my life… But it is too late. The struggle for total liberation is already in motion. Nothing can stop it.”
