The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State has announced that Governor Abba Yusuf may formally register and collect his party membership card between Tuesday and Wednesday, as the party prepares to commence its electronic registration exercise in the state.
The APC State Chairman, Abdullahi Abbas, disclosed this while addressing about 1,500 ad hoc staff engaged to conduct the e-registration exercise across Kano.
Abbas explained that the party deliberately delayed the start of the registration in Kano pending the return of its state leader, Dr Abdullahi Ganduje, and Governor Yusuf from Abuja, where both leaders reportedly held meetings with President Bola Tinubu.
“Be on standby, we may call on you tomorrow, Tuesday, depending on the arrival of the party leader, Ganduje, and the governor in Kano, so that you can start the work. But it will not exceed Wednesday,” Abbas said.
He noted that the party considered it improper to begin the exercise hastily amid reports of the governor’s defection to the APC.
“Everybody is aware of the news of the Governor’s defection, and we felt it was not polite to hurriedly commence the process without giving them the opportunity to join the party,” he stated.
According to Abbas, the registration exercise will begin no later than Wednesday and will run until the end of the month. He added that the APC leadership is aiming for Kano to record the highest number of new members nationwide, even surpassing Lagos State.
The chairman urged registration officials to admit all interested Nigerians without discrimination, stressing that inclusiveness is a core principle of the party. He also announced that local governments and wards with the highest number of new registrants would be rewarded.
Abbas emphasized the importance of the training given to the ad hoc staff, noting that registration is mandatory for anyone who intends to vote or contest for any position within the party.
“Without registration, you cannot fully participate in the party,” he said.
He disclosed that while the APC commenced the e-registration exercise in other states about two weeks ago, political developments in Kano made it necessary to delay the process locally, particularly in view of the anticipated defection of key political figures.
Reaffirming the party’s openness, Abbas said the APC welcomes all Nigerians, regardless of age or status.
“APC is a democratic party for all – leaders and the masses alike. The party needs everybody, both old and young, to come on board,” he said.
He acknowledged the economic challenges facing Nigerians but expressed optimism that conditions would improve before the next general election.
Abbas also revealed that only individuals with valid Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and National Identity cards would be eligible for the e-registration, explaining that accurate data is crucial for effective political planning and future success.
He further hinted that local governments and wards that show strong support for the party could benefit politically in the future.
