APC Defections Reflect Confidence in Tinubu’s Leadership — Felix Morka

Abuja — The All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed concerns over the rising wave of defections to the ruling party, describing the development as a vote of confidence in President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

Speaking during an interview on Arise Television on Tuesday, APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, said the party could not prevent politicians from joining its ranks, insisting that doing so would be undemocratic.

Morka was reacting to growing concerns following the defection of several governors to the APC, including the recent move by the Kano State governor.

According to him, the defections reflect what he described as a renewed belief in Nigeria’s direction under President Tinubu.

“What you are seeing are governors who have chosen to align themselves with a resurging Nigeria that this President is clearly positioning the country to become,” Morka said.

He emphasized that the APC remains open to all politicians willing to join, stressing that the party would not act as a gatekeeper.

“We are happy and excited when people come into our party. We cannot begin to filter or block those who want to join us. That would be undemocratic,” he added.

Addressing fears that the increasing number of defections could tilt Nigeria toward a one-party system, Morka rejected the notion, noting that similar political dominance had occurred in the past without threatening democracy.

“At a point in Nigeria’s history, the Peoples Democratic Party governed with roughly the same number of governors. There was no concern then about a one-party state,” he said.

Morka concluded that the current defections should not be misconstrued as an attempt to undermine democratic pluralism, but rather as a reflection of political alignment and choice within a democratic system.
