Anambra 2025: Peter Obi Calls for Peaceful Poll, Says ‘Whoever Wins, Wins for the State’

The presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general elections, Mr. Peter Obi, has called on Anambra residents and political candidates to ensure a peaceful and transparent electoral process in the forthcoming governorship election scheduled for November 8, 2025.

Speaking to journalists at his residence in Agulu, Anaocha Local Government Area, on Wednesday, Obi appealed to the people of Anambra to come out en masse and exercise their democratic rights responsibly.

“My interest in this Anambra 2025 governorship election is a peaceful process before, during, and after the exercise,” Obi said. “I want a peaceful, free, and fair election. This election is for Ndi-Anambra, and whoever wins, wins for the development of the state.”

The former governor of Anambra State also called on political actors to respect the rule of law and prioritize peace and security above personal interests.

He said all the major candidates, including the incumbent governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), and Chief George Moughalu of the Labour Party, are his friends.

“But I will vote for the candidate of my party,” Obi noted. “I urge every eligible voter in Anambra to go out and vote for the candidate of their choice.”

Obi further urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies to uphold neutrality and professionalism throughout the electoral process, stressing that credible elections remain the foundation of good governance.

Meanwhile, INEC has expressed readiness for the November 8 governorship election across Anambra’s 5,718 wards.

The Commission’s Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, during a stakeholders’ meeting in Awka, said that about 24,000 ad hoc staff will be deployed, and 540 journalists have been accredited to cover the poll.

According to him, INEC has implemented a comprehensive operational plan covering logistics, technology, training, stakeholder engagement, and security coordination. A mock accreditation exercise was also conducted last weekend across selected polling units in the state’s three senatorial districts.

A total of 16 candidates from 16 political parties are contesting the election, with Governor Soludo seeking re-election under the platform of APGA.
