Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has formally joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), completing his registration in his hometown despite rising tension in the area.
Amaechi registered with the party at Ward 8 in Ubima, located in Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State, on Friday morning.
The development came hours after suspected thugs reportedly stormed the ADC office in the community and set the facility ablaze, an incident that heightened political tension ahead of the registration exercise.
Addressing supporters shortly after completing the process, the former governor appealed for calm, urging his loyalists to avoid any form of violence or retaliation.
“Don’t be violent because violence may lead to the death of somebody — don’t be violent. At the same time, they can’t stop us from meeting in our community,” Amaechi said.
He also commended security personnel deployed to the area for maintaining order during the exercise. Amaechi specifically praised the efforts of the state Commissioner of Police and the Director of the Department of State Services (DSS) for their role in ensuring security.
The former Rivers State governor further urged security agencies to quickly identify and prosecute those responsible for the arson attack on the ADC office, stressing that acts of intimidation would not deter the party’s activities in the area.
