Hyacinth Alia has reaffirmed his administration’s resolve to restore lasting peace in Sankera, a region of Benue State that has experienced recurring security threats in recent years.
The governor gave the assurance during a stopover at the Ukum Local Government Secretariat while en route to Wukari in Taraba State for a high-level peace meeting. He stated that his government is working closely with the Federal Government to strengthen security operations in Sankera and other troubled parts of the state.
Alia disclosed plans to establish a tactical operations base of the Nigerian Army in the area to facilitate rapid response and intelligence-driven operations against terrorism, kidnapping, and banditry. He emphasized that improved security architecture remains central to stabilizing affected communities and restoring public confidence.
The governor also called on individuals engaged in criminal activities to lay down their arms and embrace peace. He urged security agencies to intensify patrols in identified high-risk areas to curb further violence.
Alia acknowledged the Tor Sankera and the Ter Ukum for expressing regret over the circumstances surrounding his earlier visit to Ukum following the April 2025 coordinated attacks on Ukum and Logo Local Government Areas. He described the gesture as a demonstration of unity and appealed to residents to continue supporting ongoing peace initiatives.
In addition to security interventions, the governor assured residents that work would soon commence on previously approved road projects in the area. He also promised the immediate reconstruction of the Ukum Local Government Secretariat, which was recently destroyed by fire.
During the visit, Alia commissioned a temporary office complex constructed by the Chairman of Ukum LGA, Hon. Jonathan Modi, to ensure continuity of administrative activities.
Former Benue State Governor, Gabriel Suswam, commended Alia’s strategy in addressing insecurity and urged citizens to sustain their support for the administration. He also highlighted the appointment of a Vice Chancellor from Sankera to Father Adasu University, Makurdi, describing it as a significant development for the region.
Hon. Prince Solomon Wombo, representing Katsina-Ala/Ukum/Logo Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, expressed appreciation for the governor’s visit and called on residents to remain united.
Other stakeholders, including the Chairman of Ukum LGA, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, and traditional rulers in the area, pledged their support for the state government’s efforts to restore peace, stability, and development in Sankera.
