ALGON Backs Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, Targets Grassroots Transformation Nationwide

The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) has pledged full implementation of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda across all 774 local government areas ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking during his inauguration on Monday in Abuja, ALGON’s Acting National President, Iliyasu Zakari, described the move as a strategic commitment to accelerating grassroots development and fostering national progress.

Zakari noted that the new leadership would prioritise stronger collaboration with the Nigeria Governors’ Forum to effectively drive the Renewed Hope Agenda, particularly in rural communities where governance has the most direct impact.

He assured that ALGON’s Board of Trustees (BOT) would deliver purposeful, development-focused leadership aimed at improving the lives of citizens at the grassroots level. Zakari, who also serves as Chairman of Agwara Local Government Council in Niger State, emphasised the association’s readiness to play a more active role in national development.

In his remarks, Chairman of the BOT, Shaban Ohinoyi, described the inauguration as a turning point for ALGON, signalling renewed unity, stability, and direction within the association.

“Today, we stand repositioned and ready to make meaningful contributions to national development, particularly at the grassroots level where governance impacts the lives of our people most directly,” Ohinoyi stated.

The event also saw the appointment of Senator Simon Lalong, Chairman of the Senate Committee on INEC and Electoral Matters, as Patron of ALGON.

Lalong highlighted the critical role of local governments in driving national growth, noting that President Tinubu has consistently championed local government autonomy as a pathway to more effective governance.

He revealed that the National Assembly is actively working on constitutional amendments to address longstanding issues surrounding local government autonomy.

“The constitutional amendment is ongoing, and these issues are at the front burner. Very soon, Nigerians will see the outcome of these efforts,” Lalong said.

The development signals a renewed push by ALGON and key stakeholders to strengthen grassroots governance structures and fast-track development efforts across Nigeria.
